A lot has been stated in the papers recently concerning the bingo industry struggling as a result of the anti smoking law in the United Kingdom. Things have become so awful that in Scotland the Bingo industry has called for massive aid to help keep the businesses afloat. But will the internet version of this quintessential game provide a reprieve, or will it not compare to its bricks and mortar relative?
Bingo has been an classic game normally played by the "blue rinse" generation. For all that the game recently had witnessed a recent return in popularity with younger people opting to go to the bingo halls instead of the clubs on a weekend. All this is about to be destroyed with the enacting of the anti cigarette law across UK.
No more will gamblers be able to smoke while dabbing numbers. Beginning in the summer of 2007 every public area will no longer be permitted to allow cigarettes in their locations and this includes Bingo parlours, one of the most common areas where players enjoy smoking.
The effects of the anti cigarette law can already be seen in Scotland where cigarettes are already forbidden in the bingo parlours. Numbers have plummeted and the industry is literally fighting for its life. But where did all the players go? Certainly they have not forgotten this age old game?
The answer is on the internet. Gamblers realise that they can gamble on bingo from their computer whilst enjoying a drink and smoke and still have a chance at huge cash rewards. This is a recent phenomenon and has happened just about perfectly with the ban on smoking.
Of course gambling on on the net is unlikely to replace the social part of heading down to the bingo hall, but for a demographic of players the governing edicts have left many bingo enthusiasts with little alternative.
