A lot has been written in the press recently about the bingo industry being hurt as a result of the cigarette ban in Britain. Conditions have grown so awful that in Scotland the Bingo industry has asked for massive aid to assist in keeping the industry from going bankrupt. However will the internet version of this classic game offer a salvation, or might it never compare to its real life relative?
Bingo has been an established game usually played by the "blue haired" generation. In any case the game of late had seen a recent resurgence in acceptance with younger members of society deciding to go to the bingo halls instead of the clubs on a Saturday night. All this is about to be destroyed with the introduction of the smoking ban throughout Britain.
No longer will players be able to smoke whilst dabbing numbers. Beginning in the summer of ‘07 every public location will no longer be allowed to permit smoking in their venues and this includes Bingo halls, which are possibly the most favorite areas where players like to smoke.
The outcome of the anti cigarette law can already be felt in Scotland where smoking is already not allowed in the bingo parlors. Players have plummeted and the industry is literally fighting for to stay alive. But where have the players gone? Of course they have not deserted this familiar game?
The answer is on the internet. People realize that they can wager on bingo using their computer at the same time enjoying a drink and cig and in the end, enjoy big cash rewards. This is a recent phenomenon and has timed itself almost perfectly with the anti cigarette law.
Of course wagering on on the net will never replace the communal part of heading over to the bingo hall, but for a demographic of people the law has left a lot of bingo players with no choice.
