Much has been talked in the press just a while ago concerning the bingo industry being hurt as a result of the cigarette ban in Britain. Conditions have grown so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has demanded huge tax breaks to help keep the industry alive. But will the net version of this classic game present a lifeline, or will it in no way compare to its bricks and mortar opposite?
Bingo is an enduring game normally played by the "blue rinse" generation. For all that the game recently had seen a recent increase in acceptance with younger members of society opting to visit the bingo parlours in place of the bars on a Friday night. All this is about to be reversed with the legislating of the smoking ban throughout England and Wales.
No more will players be permitted to smoke whilst dabbing numbers. Beginning in the summer of ‘07 every public area will not be permitted to allow smoking in their buildings and this includes Bingo parlors, one of the most popular locations where people enjoy smoking.
The effects of the anti smoking law can already be felt in Scotland where smoking is already not permitted in the bingo halls. Profits have plunged and the industry is literally fighting for to stay alive. But where did all the players go? Obviously they have not forgotten this established game?
The answer is online. Gamblers are now realizing that they can wager on bingo from their computer whilst enjoying a drink and fag and still have a chance at monstrous prizes. This is a recent development and has timed itself bordering on perfect with the anti cigarette law.
Of course wagering on on the internet can never replace the communal aspect of going down to the bingo hall, but for a demographic of players the rules have left many bingo players with little option.
