Much has been talked in the papers recently about the bingo industry singing the blues as a result of the cigarette ban in Britain. Things have become so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has requested big aid to assist in keeping the businesses from going bankrupt. But can the online version of this traditional game provide a escape, or will it not compare to its bricks and mortar relative?
Bingo has been an established game normally played by the "blue rinse" generation. For all that the game of late had experienced a recent comeback in acceptance with younger members of society opting to visit the bingo parlors rather than the bars on a Saturday night. All this is about to change with the enforcement of the smoking ban around UK.
Players will no longer be allowed to smoke at the same time marking off their numbers. Beginning in the summer of ‘07 every public place will no longer be allowed to permit cigarettes in their venues and this includes Bingo parlors, one of the most favorite places where many people enjoy smoking.
The results of the anti smoking law can already be seen in Scotland where smoking is already barred in the bingo parlors. Players have plunged and the industry is literally fighting for its life. But where have all the players gone? Obviously they haven’t deserted this enduring game?
The answer is on the net. Gamblers realise that they can bet on bingo using their computer at the same time enjoying a drink and smoke and still have a chance at huge prizes. This is a recent phenomenon and has happened bordering on perfect with the anti smoking law.
Of course playing on the net could never replace the social part of going over to the bingo hall, but for a group of people the law has left a good many bingo enthusiasts with little option.
