Will the Cigarette Ban in the UK Drive Bingo Enthusiasts Online?

Much has been reported in the papers recently concerning the bingo industry being hurt as a result of the smoking ban in the United Kingdom. Things have become so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has asked for huge aid to assist in keeping the businesses afloat. But will the net version of this classic game offer a reprieve, or might it in no way compare to its land based peer?

Bingo is an established game historically played by the "blue rinse" generation. However the game lately had experienced a recent increase in appeal with younger men and women opting to go to the bingo parlours rather than the clubs on a Friday night. This is all about to be reversed with the enacting of the smoking ban throughout UK.

Players will no longer be able to smoke whilst dabbing numbers. Beginning in the summer of ‘07 all public places will no longer be permitted to allow cigarettes in their venues and this includes Bingo halls, which are possibly the most popular places where players like to smoke.

The effects of the smoking ban can already be looked at in Scotland where smoking is already not permitted in the bingo parlors. Numbers have plunged and the industry is beyond a doubt fighting for its life. But where have the players gone? Obviously they haven’t cast aside this classic game?

The answer is on the web. Players know that they can wager on bingo in front of their computer while enjoying a beverage and smoke and in the end, enjoy monstrous prizes. This is a recent anomaly and has happened just about perfectly with the anti smoking law.

Of course wagering on on the internet could never replace the communal part of going down to the bingo parlour, but for a group of people the rules have left many bingo enthusiasts with no alternative.
