A lot has been written in the press just a while ago about the bingo industry struggling as a result of the cigarette ban in Britain. Things have grown so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has requested big tax cuts to help keep the industry from going bankrupt. However will the internet variation of this traditional game present a salvation, or will it never compare to its real life relative?
Bingo has been an familiar game historically played by the "blue haired" generation. However the game lately had undergone a recent increase in appeal with younger men and women deciding to visit the bingo parlors instead of the bars on a weekend. All this is about to get flipped on its head with the introduction of the smoking ban around Britain.
Players will no longer be able to puff on cigarettes while marking numbers. Starting in the summer of 2007 all public areas will not be permitted to allow cigarettes in their venues and this includes Bingo halls, one of the most popular areas where people enjoy smoking.
The outcome of the smoking ban can already be looked at in Scotland where smoking is already not permitted in the bingo halls. Profits have plummeted and the business is beyond a doubt struggling for to stay alive. But where have the players gone? Certainly they haven’t given up on this familiar game?
The answer is on the web. People realize that they can enjoy bingo from their computer whilst enjoying a beverage and fag and in the end, have a chance at big cash rewards. This is a recent development and has happened bordering on perfect with the ban on cigarettes.
Of course wagering on online will never replace the communal portion of going over to the bingo hall, but for a group of men and women the rules have left a number of bingo enthusiasts with little alternative.
