An abundance has been stated in the press just a while ago concerning the bingo industry struggling as a result of the smoking ban in Britain. Things have become so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has requested big tax cuts to assist in keeping the businesses afloat. But can the online version of this traditional game offer a reprieve, or will it in no way compare to its real life equivalent?
Bingo has been an ancient game generally played by the "blue rinse" generation. Although the game of late had witnessed a recent comeback in appeal with younger men and women opting to visit the bingo parlors rather than the clubs on a weekend. All this is about to get flipped on its head with the introduction of the anti smoking law all over UK.
Players will no longer be permitted to smoke whilst marking numbers. Beginning in the summer of ‘07 all public locations will not be permitted to allow smoking in their buildings and this includes Bingo parlours, one of the most favorite areas where many people like to smoke.
The effects of the anti smoking law can already be seen in Scotland where cigarettes are already not permitted in the bingo parlors. Profits have plummeted and the industry is literally struggling for its life. But where have all the players gone? Surely they have not deserted this ancient game?
The answer is on the internet. People know that they can play bingo in front of their computer at the same time enjoying a drink and smoke and still have a chance at massive jackpots. This is a recent development and has happened almost perfectly with the anti cigarette law.
Of course gambling on on the net is unlikely to replace the social aspect of going down to the bingo parlour, but for a demographic of people the governing edicts have left a number of bingo players with no choice.
